INNOVATIVE PROGRAMS
Civic Engagement
JSPOA is currently working on a Civic Engagement Initiative in Southeast Queens. As the baby boomers are retiring, they now have the desire, time and experience to volunteer and give back to the community by working with nonprofit organizations. JSPOA’s pilot program is working with over 30 nonprofit organizations to develop a Central Resource and Coordinating Committee for people in the community who want to volunteer with all kinds of nonprofit organizations
This program provides a way for older adults to continue to be active and contribute to society in their retirement years and helps nonprofit agencies continue to provide needed services in a climate of increased demands and budget cuts.

Neighborhood NNORC
NNORC is an acronym for: Neighborhood Naturally Occurring Retirement Community . A NORC is a place where people settled, raised their children, and “aged in place” over many years, so that today their community has an unusually high percentage of seniors. JSPOA’s NNORC is a pilot support program for senior homeowners 55 years and older who wish to remain in their homes and live independently, but require some form of assistance.
JSPOA convened a Task Force of local service providers and formed a Senior Leadership Council to assist with determining the community needs. The first service provided by the Task Force and the Leadership Council was to publish a community resource guide of business that provide minor home repairs, gardening/landscaping and housekeeping chores
